At this level most word-choice errors are wrong partners, not wrong grammar. The noun is usually the fixed point; what you must learn is the verb, adjective or adverb that English pairs with it.
Two words with the same dictionary translation can make very different claims. Before you choose, ask how strong the word is, whether it sounds approving or critical, and how formal it is.
| Word | What it claims |
|---|---|
| plausible | could well be true; not yet tested |
| convincing | makes you believe it |
| compelling | so strong that it is hard to reject |
| conclusive | settles the question; no doubt remains |
Some words bring an attitude with them. Cause, commit and utterly normally combine with something negative (cause damage, commit an offence, utterly unacceptable), so they sound odd with good news.
