Used to: past habits

Used to describes a habit or routine that belonged to an earlier period of your life and has stopped. It already contains the idea "but not now", so you do not have to add it.

subject + used to + base verb

• My sister and I used to share a room.
• We used to send each other postcards from every trip.
• He used to visit his grandmother every Sunday.

Used to: past states

Used to also describes how things were: a situation, a feeling, an opinion or a relationship that lasted for some time and has changed. The verb is a state verb such as be, have, know, like, love, live or think.

• My brother used to be jealous of my friends.
• I used to love big parties, but now I prefer a quiet dinner.
• They used to have the same group of friends.

The contrast with the present is often added with but now, not any more or no longer.
