“Under the weather”

Under the weather in a real conversation

Use this expression to say that you feel unwell. It does not describe the weather outside, and it does not identify a particular illness. In a medical conversation, explain your actual symptoms rather than relying on the idiom alone.

Compare “I am under the weather” (I feel unwell) with “The weather is bad” (the outdoor conditions are unpleasant). The subject and the meaning change.

Use a form of be: “I am feeling a little under the weather today.” For a past situation: “She was under the weather yesterday.” A little softens the description; it does not tell the listener what symptoms you have.

A: Would you like to meet for coffee?

B: I am a little under the weather today. Could we meet on Friday instead?

Reply to a friend who invites you out. Explain that you feel unwell and suggest another day. Then rewrite your reply without the idiom, using “I do not feel well”. Which version sounds more natural in your conversation?
