Explanations

Your first Mandarin conversation

Greet someone, ask their name and introduce yourself.

Learn the words first

你好

nǐ hǎo

hello

叫

jiào

to be called

什么

shénme

what

名字

míngzi

name

安娜

Ānnà

Anna (example name)

A greeting and a sound change

你好 is written nǐ hǎo. Before another third tone, the first third tone is normally pronounced with a rising second-tone contour: roughly ní hǎo. This is third-tone sandhi. Keep the dictionary spelling nǐ hǎo while learning how the phrase sounds.

Ask and answer a name

我叫… means My name is…: put your name after 叫. 你叫什么名字? asks What is your name? 什么 replaces the unknown information; you do not add 吗 to this question. Practise greeting, question and answer as separate short turns.

Examples to read and repeat

你好!

Nǐ hǎo!

Hello!

你叫什么名字?

Nǐ jiào shénme míngzi?

What is your name?

我叫安娜。

Wǒ jiào Ānnà.

My name is Anna.
