About this English level check
What the test measures
The Sunny Academy Full CEFR Level Check is a CEFR-aligned placement assessment. CEFR — the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages — is the six-level scale (A1 to C2) used across Europe and much of the world to describe what a learner can actually do in a language, rather than reducing ability to a single percentage score.
The check covers 5 separate skill areas. Language use tests grammar and vocabulary in context: verb forms, articles, prepositions, word choice and collocation. Reading measures how well you extract meaning, detail and inference from written texts of increasing density. Listening uses recorded audio at natural speed to test comprehension of gist, detail and speaker attitude. Writing asks you to produce a short piece of connected text appropriate to a prompt. Speaking records short spoken responses through your microphone and evaluates fluency, pronunciation clarity, range and accuracy.
Scoring each skill separately matters because most learners are uneven. It is common to read comfortably at B2 while speaking at B1, or to have strong listening from years of film and video but weaker productive grammar. A single overall number hides exactly the gap you most need to work on.
How the assessment is structured
The check opens with 24 language use questions: four for each CEFR level from A1 to C2, half grammar and half vocabulary. Together they give a first estimate of your level, which the rest of the assessment builds on. After that come three reading texts, three listening recordings, a writing task and a speaking task.
Plan for roughly 45–55 minutes for the full assessment — less if you choose fewer sections. You can skip any section during the test; skipped and unselected sections are shown as “Not assessed”, and one overall level is given only when all five sections are completed. Keep this page open while you take the test.
A working microphone is required for the speaking section. If microphone access is unavailable or denied, check your permissions and try again, or skip speaking. A skipped section is marked “Not assessed”, and the report will not include an overall English level.
How your answers are graded
Language use, reading and listening are marked against fixed answer keys. Writing and speaking are graded by an AI model against CEFR descriptors, looking at task achievement, coherence, grammatical range and accuracy, lexical range, and — for speaking — fluency and intelligibility.
Writing and speaking are graded by AI. AI grading of productive skills is useful for orientation and for tracking your own progress over time, but it is not equivalent to a trained human examiner. Treat the result as indicative guidance on where to focus, not as a certified measurement.
You receive a level report breaking down each of the 5 areas, so you can see where your skills sit relative to one another and which area is holding your overall level back.
What to do with your result
The most useful outcome is a study direction. If your productive skills (writing, speaking) sit a band below your receptive skills (reading, listening), the bottleneck is usually output practice rather than more input — you need to be producing language, not consuming more of it. If the reverse is true, targeted reading and listening at slightly above your current level will move you fastest.
The report links to course levels matched to your result, and to daily speaking practice if speaking is your weakest area. Retaking the check after a few months of consistent work gives you a like-for-like comparison rather than a subjective impression of progress.
The six CEFR levels
Your result places you on the standard six-level CEFR scale. Each level is defined by what you can do, not by how many questions you answered correctly.
- A1Beginner
- Understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases. Introduce yourself, ask and answer questions about personal details, and interact simply if the other person speaks slowly and clearly.
- A2Elementary
- Understand sentences and frequently used expressions about immediate needs — shopping, local geography, employment. Communicate in simple routine tasks requiring a direct exchange of information.
- B1Intermediate
- Deal with most situations likely to arise while travelling. Produce connected text on familiar topics, describe experiences and events, and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans.
- B2Upper-intermediate
- Understand the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussion in your own field. Interact with fluency and spontaneity that makes conversation with native speakers comfortable for both sides.
- C1Advanced
- Understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts and recognise implicit meaning. Express yourself fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for expressions, and use language flexibly for social, academic and professional purposes.
- C2Proficiency
- Understand with ease virtually everything heard or read. Summarise information from different spoken and written sources, reconstructing arguments coherently, and express yourself precisely while differentiating finer shades of meaning.
This is an educational self-assessment tool. It is not an accredited examination, not a certification, and not a substitute for a formal language qualification. Writing and speaking scores are produced by an AI model and should be treated as indicative.
Common questions
- Is the level check paid?
- The Sunny Academy Full CEFR Level Check covers 5 skills and an AI-generated CEFR report.
- Do I need to create an account?
- The line next to the Start button shows whether this check currently needs an account.
- How long does it take?
- The full assessment takes approximately 45–55 minutes, depending on how quickly you work through the speaking and writing sections. If you choose fewer sections, the estimate shown before you start is shorter.
- What happens if I close the page halfway through?
- Keep the page open while you take the test.
- Is my voice recording stored?
- Your spoken answer is recorded during the speaking task, transcribed, and used for grading. The recording is stored privately with your attempt and is not shown to other users. See the Privacy Policy for full detail.
- Is this an official certificate?
- No. This is a CEFR-aligned self-assessment. It is not an IELTS, TOEFL, Cambridge or any other accredited examination, and it cannot be submitted to universities or employers as formal proof of proficiency.
- Can I retake it?
- Yes, you can take the check again. For a meaningful comparison, leave a reasonable gap — a few months of study — between attempts.
